Nagshankar Temple

Located about 50 km east of Tezpur, the mystical Sree Sree Nagshankar Devalaya is steeped in legend. According to local lore, when Lord Shiva wandered the universe carrying the body of Sati, her naval part is said to have fallen at this site, leading to the construction of the temple. Believed to have been built by King Nagshankar in the 4th century AD, the temple has been renovated several times by various Ahom kings. The temple premises feature a large pond, which is home to numerous endangered species of Soft-Shell Turtles.
