Chaired by District Commissioner Shri Ananda Kumar Das, the session focused on selecting native, culturally relevant names for newly identified Tezpur Litchi varieties and finalizing plans for the upcoming Tezpur Litchi Festival 2026.
The prestigious festival is scheduled to take place on June 6th and 7th, 2026, at the District Library, Tezpur.
Protecting GI Identity and Boosting Global Market Branding
As Tezpur Litchi expands its footprint across domestic and international markets, the meeting highlighted the urgent need for a clear, standardized nomenclature system. Giving distinct, scientifically compliant, and locally meaningful names to the new cultivars (cultivated varieties) is essential for:
- Preserving the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) identity of Tezpur Litchi.
- Preventing market duplication.
- Strengthening the fruit’s premium branding worldwide.
During the session, Dr. Angana Sarmah, Senior Scientist & Head (i/c) of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sonitpur, delivered a detailed visual presentation. She outlined the unique morphological (physical) characteristics of the newly identified cultivars alongside the existing GI-tagged varieties.

The second half of the meeting reviewed the logistical arrangements and proposed activities for the highly anticipated Tezpur Litchi Festival 2026.
