Sonitpur Hosts Orientation on Social & Behaviour Change for Disaster Risk Reduction

A district-level, one-day orientation programme on “Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)” was held today at the DDMA Conference Hall in Sonitpur.

Organized by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Sonitpur, the initiative aimed to enhance community-based disaster preparedness and promote behavioural change for effective risk reduction.

Inauguration and Key Leadership Insights

The programme was officially inaugurated by District Commissioner Shri Ananda Kumar Das, alongside ADC-cum-CEO of DDMA Sonitpur, Shri Kamal Baruah.

While addressing the participants, the District Commissioner emphasized:

  • The critical role of Social and Behaviour Change in strengthening disaster preparedness.
  • Fostering long-term community resilience.
  • Encouraging proactive risk reduction through coordinated departmental efforts and active public participation.

The orientation saw active participation from:

  • Shri Ikbal Hussain Laskar (DPO, DDMA Sonitpur) and other DDMA officers.
  • Nodal officers from various stakeholder departments.
  • Field Officers representing all Revenue Circles.

Technical Sessions and Key Focus Areas

Technical sessions were spearheaded by ASDMA resource persons Shri Kishore Dutta (Project Officer, Training & Capacity Building) and Shri Nitu Moni Borah (Project Officer, PWD Building & NH).

The expert-led sessions focused heavily on:

  • SBC in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
  • Risk communication and community engagement
  • Feedback mechanisms
  • Flood risk management
  • District-level action planning

Interactive Learning and Conclusion

The event featured interactive discussions and group activities, offering participants a collaborative platform to share experiences and explore practical approaches for boosting community awareness and readiness.

The programme successfully concluded with a feedback session and the distribution of certificates to all participants.
