The two-day Tezpur Litchi Festival 2026 commenced today at the District Library Auditorium in Tezpur. The event celebrates the rich heritage, unique identity, and growing global recognition of the GI-tagged Tezpur Litchi.
A Tribute to the Pioneers
The festival began with a solemn tribute to Sahitya Kandari Padmanath Gohain Baruah. As the first Assamese Chairman of the Tezpur Municipal Board, he pioneered the introduction of improved litchi varieties to Tezpur in the early 1920s, laying the foundation for one of Assam’s most celebrated horticultural products.
District Commissioner of Sonitpur, Shri Ananda Kumar Das, members of the Padmanath Gohain Baruah family, progressive litchi growers, and other dignitaries paid homage by lighting ceremonial lamps before his portrait.
Inaugural Session Highlights
Following a welcome by the SSB Brass Band, the formal inaugural session featured several key events:
- Lighting of the ceremonial lamp
- Screening of a documentary on Tezpur Litchi
- Release of a book on Tezpur Litchi
- Felicitation of progressive litchi farmers
- Distribution of litchi saplings to students
- Inauguration of the exhibition-cum-sale pavilion
- An inspiring session titled “Journey of a Litchi Entrepreneur”
A major highlight of the day was the release of two commemorative Special Covers by the Department of Posts. One is dedicated to the world-renowned GI-tagged Tezpur Litchi, and the other honours Dey’s Food Product, Mazbat, recognizing the region’s agricultural excellence and entrepreneurial achievements.
Distinguished Guests in Attendance
The inaugural session was graced by Shri Ranjit Dutta (Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Sonitpur Lok Sabha Constituency) as Chief Guest.

- Dignitaries from NABARD, the Army, the Agriculture Department, entrepreneurs, scientists, academicians, leading citizens, and farmers.
Public Celebrations and Field Visits
Simultaneously, special public programmes were organized at Ananda Chandra Agarwala Park, featuring vibrant performances by bands from the Indian Army, the SSB, and local schools.
District Commissioner Shri Ananda Kumar Das attended these performances, interacted with the participating bands and visitors, and visited local litchi plantations and orchards to speak directly with farmers and industry stakeholders.
Looking Ahead to Day Two
The festival aims to promote Tezpur Litchi at both national and international levels. It will continue tomorrow with a packed schedule focusing on the fruit’s unique legacy and economic potential, including:
- Workshops and technical sessions on cultivation, food processing, and post-harvest management
- Discussions on export opportunities and buyer-seller interactions
- Orchard tours and culinary demonstrations
- Student competitions and cultural programmes
- The official closing ceremony
