World No Tobacco day observed today here at the premises of District Library including other parts of Tezpur in Sonitpur District under the aegis of District Tobacco Control Cell, Sonitpur in association with District Legal Services Authority, Tezpur. The theme for “World No Tobacco Day”, 31 May 2018, is “ Tobacco and heart Diseases “. The programme was attended by ADC, Sonitpur, Kishan Kumar Sarmah, Mridu Chanda Bordoloi, Secretary of District Legal Service Authority, Tezpur including Dr. S P Bordoloi, Dr. Durlav Saikia, Krishna Sarmah, President Tezpur Mahila Samiti among others.


While inaugurating the programme, Kishan Kumar Sarmah, ADC, Sonitpur said that ” every individual should contribute to making a sustainable, tobacco-free society, either by committing to never taking up tobacco or by quitting the habit. Attending the programme, Mridu Ch. Bordoli briefed that “it should be our moral duty to contribute in the mission as all section will benefit from successfully controlling the tobacco epidemic, above all by protecting our society from the harms of tobacco use and reducing its economic toll on national economies. She also said that cigarette and other tobacco product act 2003 as per law tobacco products be sold to a person below the age of 18 years, and in places within 100 meters radius from the outer learning established or recognized by an appropriate authority

Dr. D. C Saikia Nodal officer, District Tobacco Control Cell Sonitpur said in his speech that tobacco contains about 4000 chemical out of which 43 chemical are carcinogenic. Tobacco causes about 55 Diseases From Ahead to toe like in Head- Hair- Loss, transient ischemic attack, stroke, Macular degeneration, loss of memory, insomnia.

Dr. SP Bordoloi Said that “is necessary to discover why we become addicted to tobacco, because we don’t love ourselves.  When we start loving our lives, all these habits or addictions will definitely set aside.”

Earlier, the rally has been carried out from Kanaklata Civil Hospital to District Library by Ashok Kumar Borah, District and Session Judge, Sonitpur along with various institutions and social organization participated with a slogan to stop tobacco in Tezpur city.
