
Social Work is a practiced based profession that primarily deals with people, their relationships and their concerns related to geo socio political issues. Social workers work with individuals, groups, families and communities and strive to work towards a development of policies and legislations that matter foster social and national development. In the pursuit of human wellbeing, they often have to work in hostile contexts with little resources and most often their work fails to get noticed.
In order to appreciate and recognise the important contributions of social work profession, the World Social Work Day is celebrated since 1983. This day falls on the third Tuesday in March. All over the world, social workers gather to exchange knowledge and share experiences and to celebrate the profession. Each year, there is a theme that reflects the objective social workers have to strive to promote and achieve.
This year, the World Social Work Day was celebrated on the 19th March 2019. The theme for the year is Promoting the Importance of Human Relationships
The Department of Psychiatric Social Work, LGBRIMH Tezpur celebrated the World Social Work Day 2019 on the 22nd of March by organising a one day seminar on ‘Promoting Human Relationships through Social Systems’. Mrs. Meenkashi Bhuyan, President Tezpur Town Mahila Samiti was the chief guest for this program. Dr. Sonia P Deuri, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatric Social Work, LGBRIMH, Tezpur gave the welcome address and Dr. Sobhana H Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatric Social Work, LGBRIMH unfurled the theme of the World Social Work Day. Dr. Bino Thomas, Assistant Professor, NIMHANS Bengaluru was an invited guest. Dr. Aparajeeta Baruah, In Charge Academics and Professor and Head Department of Psychiatry , LGBRIMH also gave a talk. Dr. Arif Ali Assistant Professor, DPSW, LGBRIMH, Tezpur delivered the vote of thanks. The inaugural programme was followed by a seminar on ‘Social Systems: the Building Blocks for Human Relationships’. Topics like ‘Facets of human relationships, Cultural practices to foster healthy Role of family in promoting healthy relationship human relationship and Social work profession in promoting human relationship and the panel discussion on ‘role of the society in strengthening human relationships’ were covered by Dr. Sobhana H, Dr. Moushumi Kandali, Assistant Professor, Department of Cultural Studies, TU, Dr. Bino Thomas and Dr. Arif Ali respectively. The session was chaired by Dr. Sonia P Deuri. Later a short film was screened for discussion and this session was facilitated by Dr. Indrajeet Banerjee, Assistant Professor, DPSW, LGBRIMH, Tezpur. There was also a post lunch session of panel discussion on the topic Role of Society in Strengthening Human Relationships. This discussion was chaired by Dr. Sonia P Deuri.Dr. Pallavi Jha , Assistant Professor, Dept of English, TU, Ms. Abha Bora, Panel Advocate, District Legal Services Authority, Tezpur, Ms. Namami Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, TU and Ms. Rashi Rekha Sarmah, Deputy SP, Sonitpur were the panelists.
The one day seminar concluded with a cultural program by the organizers and participants.
