Bihu dance workshop underway in Tezpur

Along with rest of the State, the people of Tezpur  are also being seen busy preparing for the upcoming Rangali Bihu, the festival of joy and prosperity.

The major Rongali Bihu committees in Tezpur town, Uttar Tezpur Rongali Bihu Sanmilan, Madhya Tezpur Rongali Bihu Sanmilan, Luitpar Rongali Bihu Sanmilan, Dakshin-Pachim Rongali Bihu Sanmilan, Polo-field Rongali Bihu Sanmilan, Uttar Pub Tezpur Rongali Bihu Sanmilan, Mazgaon Bihu Sanmilan, Tezpur Central Rongali Bihu Sanmilan, Joymati Pathar Bihu Sanmilan among others, are all gearing up to glamorize the festival in a befitting manner.

On the other hand, as like in the past two years, Chandmari Surjyamukhi Mahila Samitte has taken initiative on conducting  a 15 day Bihu dance and Dhol (traditional assamese drum) playing and training workshop at Chandmari Bihu Bakori premises here.

This workshop is organized  to propagate the rich Assamese folk culture among the new generation, who tend to forget the assamese culture and have adopted many forms of western culture.

The workshop is being conducted under the guidance of two resources persons, Mousumi Sharma, eminent Bihu dancer, an exponent of playing the ‘dhol’, Jyoti Prakash Baruah and bihu experts Jubilee Saikia, Bandana Das, Prijam Baruah and Bidya man Bhuyan.

Around 120 children are participating in the workshop. These include 80 for bihu dance and 40 for ‘dhol’ playing, said Purnima Baruah Majumdar, President of Surjyamukhi Mahila Samitte. She further said, “ The workshop is conducted every year with a moto to save the Assamese culture and propagate its high moral values among the children of the new generation.”

“I have been learning Bihu for the past three years here. This time we are happy to get an expert like Jyoti Prakash Baruah among us,” said Class VI student Baby Lisha Majumdar.

Momi Baruah, Secretary, Surjyamukhi Mahila Samitte Chandmari, said that the workshop will conclude on March 31 with a grand closing ceremony in presence of distinguished guests. Tezpur AASU is also organizing a workshop on Bihu dance and dhol playing at Tezpur Swahid Bakari.
