Maha Sivaratri was celebrated today with great enthusiasm at the historic Mabhairab Temple witness of Asia’s biggest Shiva –Lingam. About 50,000 people converged on the temple where Maha Sivaratri has been celebrating since long. Celebrations were held across the state on the occasion of Sivaratri, as the devotees thronged the temples to pay obeisance to Lord Siva since the wee hours today. It may be mentioned here that the ancient temple of Mahabhairab which stands to the north of the historic Tezpur town, and which is believed to have been established by king Bana with a Shiva lingam, has been a ‘must visit’ destination for the devotees and other visitors, irrespective of religion. Devotees worshipped Lord Siva with flowers, milk, bel fruit and leaves, dhatura, sandalwood paste etc., to seek his blessings.
The two days long Maha Sivaratri puja boran inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner, Sonitpur Narsing Pawar and puja offered by Former CM Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Family member of the Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi, SP, Sonitpur, Kumar Sanjit Krishna, Circle Officer Pankaj Chamua among others.
Long queues were witnessed outside the Siva temples throughout the day and The main highlights of the fest included exhibition stalls, colourful cultural procession and flying of hundreds of balloons with spiritual messages in the sky.
Munin Baruah, Secretary of the Shivaratri mela celebration committee of Mahabhairab temple, said that as in the past, this year too a two-days mela has been organised at the venue and Mela starting from 4 including others arrangements being made smooth accomplishment with the all-out cooperation and association with Sonitpur district Administration, police and other prolific members of the committee.
